Ok so what did the Easter bunny bring you ? it brought me a little weight gain and a rise in blood glucose levels, but it wasn't a shock and I wasn't as devastated as I would have been once, because now I know I have the key to my own self, I know that letting go of the reins occasionally is not going to have me spiraling out of control, like the Type 1 diabetic knows to calculate how much insulin to inject to have that deadly sugar coated doughnut, I know how much carbs I can get away with (not much I can tell you) but I have to say that certain carbs that I thought I would never live without, Bread is one, I just don't miss, but having said that, over Easter I did have some bread, it was either sour dough or Turkish (low to no sugar) but it was still carbs.
I am a carbs-oholic but I don't kid myself and say one carb wont hurt, I believe that carbs are the culprit for the diabetes, and to remain in control of my diabetes I know that every chip or crumb of bread will cause a rise in my BGL's that is just how it is and I accept it, but I don't let it hold me back from joining in the celebrations (like I use to) like I said I have found the key, so when I unleash the carbs-oholic I just use the key to lock it away again, ha ha. I can't blame it all on Easter either, I didn't have any chocolate or crave any chocolate, although I did use some sugar free chocolate chips in the sugar free hot cross buns I made for Easter, they were nice, and made it feel more like Easter in this sugar free home, I think preparing for Andrew's 60th did the bulk of the damage, I decided I liked cocktails and I did indulge in a few, not to mention the food I made, all sugar free of course, but we all know too much of a good thing... well is not good. I knew I needed to get back on the straight and narrow so I started my juice fast again yesterday, Joe Cross calls it a reboot and that is pretty well what it is, I have been following this other "Juice Junkie" Neil Martin, similar story to most of these Juice guru's had health issues and fixed it with Juicing, simple really. I signed up to do Neil Martins guided budget juice fast for 7 days starting next Monday, but to be honest I didn't want to wait another week to get back to scratch, I know it is OK to drop the reins occasionally but I am scared that the bloody horse will bolt, (can you tell I like metaphors?). I think it is only fair that I follow a few Juicers as I do follow a few Sugar Free Guru's and also have a list of doctors that provide the science behind the theories of why it all works. The latest gimmick from the big "Sugar Kings" Pepsi, is the shape of the bottles that they a selling their sugar filled drinks in is shaped like a dumbbell? well they are dumb if they think people are going to fall for this gimmick, and who are they aiming this latest advertising ploy at? it would have to be kids, because surely there is not an adult out there that believes that drinking Pepsi or coke or any other soft drink , energy drinks and fruit juices are going to be good for you? one glass of any of these drinks will put you at your daily limit of sugar intake. It is laughable! On a positive note, one of my favourite actors John Goodman has quit sugar, and look at him now! and another impressive actress Melissa McCarthy has lost a lot of weight also although not much is said about the how, but good for both of these funny thespians, just goes to show you don't have to be fat to be jolly.

Here is a video from BBC interviewer Jeremy Paxman, interviewing the President of Coca Cola Europe - James Quincy, he is obviously squirming and is either deliberately being deceitful or is very bad at maths, he says the amount of sugar in a can of coke is 35gms which he said is 6 teaspoons of sugar, well Mr Quincy 1 teaspoon = 4 gms, and I think it is closer to 9 teaspoons of sugar than 6, there is nothing he says that justifies that much sugar and he has trouble convincing Jeremy, and he uses my hated word "Moderation" so I felt the need to share this story. Did you know that Coke Classic has to have that amount of sugar per can, to hide the taste of the hideous amount of salt, the salt is so you will drink more and besides the sugar and salt there is a few chemical nasties in there as well, so i don't know who in their right mind would still be drinking this crap. That is about all I have to say on this matter at this moment but I won't say rant over it is just paused.
Ok so who do yo believe? we have all heard that it is not good to follow trends and fad diets, and I am fed up hearing everything is ok in moderation, but why is the government and dietary associations like the "The Heart Association" and the "The Diabetes Association" just to name two, are the ones to set the bar? these people are more concerned with the financials than the health aspects of the community.
(Have you ever had a look at a Diabetes cookbook? go to a bookshop and pick up a Diabetes cookbook and have a look at the ingredients in the recipes, Sugar sugar, maple syrup, medjool Dates, honey, canola oil, vegetable oil, margarine, and not to mention low fat dairy, everything that is bad for you! put the book back on the shelf and get out as fast as you can and try and erase what you have just read, because you have just witnessed how to make a recipe for death if you have diabetes) The latest headline from Brits Government... "The dangers of a low-carb diet" on top of the "sugar tax" they are introducing, they now recommend that Brits eat more Carbohydrates (potatoes, bread, pasta) all the starchy carbs, (a bit of a contradiction! taxing one carb while encouraging to eat another carb)they also say to stick with the five serves of fruit and veg per day, they want you to cut back on red meat and dairy, so those farmers are obviously not lining the pockets of the government, the big processed food companies have got the backing of the government, after all the talk of the dangers of Sugar, they have now played a little switcharoo with the words to say that Low carb is dangerous and you should make sure you get your breakfast cereal and thick slices of toast everyday as well as big potato with your evening meals, so in a nation of growing obesity and health issues they are suggesting people eat more of the stuff that got them this way!!! Money is never going to be more important than your health because it is no good having the money if you don't live to enjoy it, and why am I banging on about the Brits anyway? well I think the saying is.. " if America sneezes we catch the cold? but we look up to England, we still are a British Monarchy, not that I think there is anything wrong with that, but come on! 2 steps forward and a giant leap backwards. So who are you going to believe? the government bodies that are more concerned about Money than health or the doctors and scientists that have called the bluff on the last 30-40 years of falsities? I chose to believe certain doctors that give you the reasoning behind the science and explain it in simple terms so you can understand, and the regular everyday Joe with nothing to gain by sharing the recipe of health and weight loss, I have become one of those people who have found the key to my own health and weight loss, firstly by following David Gillespie's advice on cutting sugar from your diet, and then discovering another everyday Joe, Joe Cross and how juicing your veges and drinking them can fill your body with the nutrients that are needed to not only help you to lose weight but to fix a number of health problems, I was able to lower my cholesterol control my Diabetes without medication that I had been on for over 10 years and lose weight, and I have heard people also call Juicing Vegetables a fad, but to me a fad is something that is not sustainable like cutting your calories or portion sizes so low that you are always hungry or not getting enough fibre so you end up ill from lack of going or lack of protein and you having major brain fog? I have found and it has been proven that you get all the protein and fibre as well as vitamins, and iron that your body needs, and there is a certain amount of carbs in fruit and vegetables so you are not cutting them out completely but cutting them way back so you can honestly say "LOW CARB". Low Carb is the opposite to dangerous, it is outright beneficial to your health and will control your diabetes even cure it, if you stick with it for life. The saying "Everything in Moderation" is my most detested saying, and I found an article that actually words it perfectly, so with a little cut and paste, here is my "plagiarized" rant...
There are certain sayings that are floating around out there that really drive me nuts. And the “everything in moderation” one is close to the top of the list. I’ve been out at social gatherings where there are foods that really wreck havoc on my body so I refrain (sugar, toxic oils and having diabetes) I don’t talk about it or make a stink about it, (yes I do ha ha) I just find what I can enjoy, express gratitude for it and enjoy. Inevitably, I’ll be minding my own business & someone will ask why I’m not having the cake or whatever it is that everyone is eating. When I politely share with them that eating it wouldn’t make me feel good, he or she will say to me, “ just go ahead & treat yourself. You can’t deprive yourself–everything in moderation, right?” Um…seriously? Would you tell an alcoholic that it’s okay to have “just one drink”? Or the recovering drug addict that just having one hit is ok? And what exactly am I depriving myself of?
Let’s face it–we are hardly a nation of people who do things moderately. It’s rarely just one cookie, one handful of chips or one glass of wine. And honestly, the stuff that people use that statement to justify eating usually isn’t even real food–they just want to feel better about the crap they are putting into their bodies. The funny thing about this is that, in most cases, if I were to suggest to the same person who said “everything in moderation” to incorporate some veggies into their life, to drink a small green smoothie daily or to moderately exercise they typically respond with “no way, I couldn’t do that”. Really? I thought “everything in moderation”?” Now, I am fully aware that I am a sugar Nazi and that certain foods make me rant more than others do. Sometimes, it’s a choice of eating shitty food that makes you feel bad or not eating it and feeling good. Welcome to life. The only thing I feel like I’m “depriving” myself of is all of the things I’ve listed above. Who wouldn’t want to deprive themselves of that? If you would like to read the unedited version of this "Everything in Moderation Bulls#%t" here is the link http://smartsexyliving.com/why-everything-in-moderation-is-bullst/ Anyway I have been waiting a long time to work the whole "moderation" crap into a post, I like how Heather says that people use "everything in moderation to justify eating crap (Not real food) and if you think I am joking about it not being real food, start reading some labels, go into the supermarket, pick up a packet of your "moderation biscuits" and read the label, after you justify that the sugar content is not that bad, look at the ingredients, without even knowing what you have picked up, I am betting there is at least 3 items you don't recognize as food items, also a couple of numbers thrown in, some toxic oil (even the baked not fried biscuits have some form of vegetable oil or seed oil) which we all know now you don't get oil from vegetables so it is manufactured oil, man made "NOT REAL FOOD!" I only wish I had a packet of biscuits in the cupboard so I could quote some of these non food items to prove a point, but my pantry is sugar free and crap free, I am like Heather, I like having my diabetes in check without a handful of pills daily, i like keeping my weight down, I like having more energy, and really I like feeling good within myself, so you can have your "in moderation" theory, although I have to say I haven't heard anyone say it to me lately, I wonder why ha ha. Eat real food people! Sugar is the new Cigarettes is the best headline I have read this week, and it is so true, Sugar is even more addictive than smoking, and it effects everyone even babies and toddlers, which thankfully don't smoke, but still children and babies are affected by the passive smoke, and now that I have been smoke free for over 21 years, I know how disgusting breathing in someones cigarette smoke is, so not only do I beat myself up about the amount of sugar I gave my girls by encouraging them to drink only pure Apple juice, when they were kids, for my eldest daughter I shared the filthy cigarette smoke with her, I smoked all through my pregnancy with her (and I was sick for the whole 9 months, a bit of karma I think) I still can't believe I did that, and why was I surprised when she started smoking as a teenager, she had been virtually smoking her whole life. Why didn't I have internet in 1985, why didn't I know? by the way my whole family were smokers so maybe I can lay some blame there.
I remember asking the nurse at the hospital when I went for a check up, " what effect will it have on my baby if I don't stop smoking" her answer was that "the baby would be underweight and premature", well that wasn't enough to scare me smoke free, and my daughter was born nearly 3 weeks past due date and of normal size, but just as I didn't know in 1985 what the dangers of smoking were, the nurses advice was not very informative either, and I may not have known the dangers of my cigarette addiction back then, but I knew that Type 2 diabetes was called "Sugar Diabetes" and you had to cut out sugar from your diet. My father had diabetes but wouldn't admit he did, right up until he was in hospital after having his leg amputated he still denied that he was Diabetic, and would ask my brother to bring him in some cans of soft drink, "Not his fault he had 2 addictions- Sugar and Smoking" he paid dearly, he paid with his life. That should have been the day I gave up smoking, but I didn't but I did start to question why I was smoking and I started to cut back and smoke lighter cigarettes. Addiction is very real, and I believe you have to want to give up before you can give up, a lot of people say they have to give up because the cost is too great, but like drug addicts money is never going to be a strong enough issue to fight an addiction, no the reason there is still people smoking today even though they are pushed so far outside away from "the non smoking world" basically treated like a leper is because they don't want to give up smoking! And really until they actually make it illegal to smoke cigarettes, it is their choice, to smoke. I did however want to give up smoking when I discovered I was pregnant with daughter number two, and the day I threw my half finished packet of cigarettes in the bin, was the last day I smoked in over 21 years, I wanted to give it up. My Addiction to Sugar is a whole other story, firstly before I gave up smoking, I didn't think I had an overly sweet tooth, but I did have a weakness for Ice cream and chocolate, and would have the occasional binge, I wasn't a breakfast eater, and I never used added sugar, and from and early age I didn't like the texture of sugar against my teeth and would use artificial sweetners in my tea and coffee, but that didn't stop me from developing Type 2 diabetes, whether it was from my food choices or inherited is still not clear, but it has taken me over 13 years to actually quit my Sugar addiction and get my diabetes in control. Now that I am informed of the dangers of Sugar addiction, I chose to quit Sugar for good and not just the added sugars it is all the hidden sugars that add up and keep you addicted, I think you have to take the same approach to your sugar addiction as you would , Smoking , Drugs or Alcohol addictions, if you are addicted then you have a problem, and you have to want to stop the problem, you can always start cutting out the obvious sugars and wean yourself off slowly, or just do as Joey from Full House/Fuller House says "CUT IT OUT". To sum up, I have been an addict for 34 of my 56 years of age, but I am happy to say that I am a quitter! |
