Pretty cheesy title, but what else can I say? it has been way too long since I have written in my blog, and it has way too long since I Juiced.
Ok so the last post was back in May last year 2022, and I had just watched Jason Vales new video and was inspired to get healthy again. Of course it worked and I acheived really good weight loss my blood sugars came down to normal and I was doing ok for a while. Then midway through last year, the new wonder drug for diabetes I had been subscribed was in very short supply, so short that I had none and so couldn't continue to take it. That is when the carb creep began and little by little I was eating carbs again, essentially I had given up, later in the year I had a cruise coming up and thought I might as well wait until after the cruise to get my health in check. All good cruise done and dusted, only gained 2.3 kilo on the cruise which I thought was pretty impressive concidering the food I was eating on the cruise, but being a bit slack and still not being able to get the trulicity, I continued to eat poorly, and what with Christmas coming up, what was the point of juicing over Christmas right? I was true to my word and started my Juice fast on Monday the 2nd of January 2023, starting weight was appalling blood sugar was worse! My fasting BGL on that day was 23.2 , unfortunately I haven't found any inspiring new videos to help keep me on track so I have just used my will and determination to keep going, it helps to see the scales come down by 3 and a bit kilo, but the main thing is that my blood sugar has dropped to around 6, which I am happy about. I didn't realise how many cooking programs and recipe groups I subscribe to on Facebook, until you are juice fasting and all you see on Fb is food and not just any food the most tempting cakes and desserts. I say tempting but I am strong I wont be swayed, but what I did stumble across is Dr Ken Berry talking about the Carnivore diet or what he calls the BBBE (Beef, Bacon, Butter and Eggs) diet, claims to lose 24 pounds (10kilo) in a week, that seems like wow. I watched a couple of Dr Berry's you tube videos and instead of being inpired for the juicing I am actually inspired to give this Carnivore diet ago, because the carb intake is practically zero it is good for diabetes too, of course I have every intention of staying on keto after this juicing period (which I haven't yet decided how long I will go for) but from what I have seen of the carnivore diet it is very similar to keto only it would be like doing Keto on steroids, so I will keep you posted on what I decide to do when this session is complete. I will post the video here if you want to take a look, very interesting how many ailments it can mend to make you feel good again.

Yes I am back again, and I can't believe it has been 10 months since I last wrote on my blog, it has also been at least that long since I have doné any sort of juice fast, I just couldn't get motivated.
I stumbled across Jason Vale's latest video Super Juice me 1.5 (one and a half) so I watched it and I was inspired (again) like I was in 2015 when I first watched Joe Cross's "Fat Sick and Nearly Dead". If you haven't heard of Jason Vale he has been around and Juicing for health for about 25 years, that is when he found juicing and got his life together, He is 52 now but in his mid 20's Jason suffered the skin disease psoriasis, bad asthma , heavy drinker, heavy smoker and grossly over weight in his words. I think that is why I am inspired so much by both Joe and Jason, they both had illnesses and got healthy through juicing and I figure if they can do it then so can I. here is the link to Jasons video if you want to be inspired too! Anyway on with this new journey of 28 days of Juicing, we are actually on day 9 of 28 days, and I think we are both on track, Jason says that in 28 days you will lose 20lbs, which is 9kilo, which would make me one happy camper that is for sure. As always my diabetes is my first concern and at the start of this 28 days my BGL was 14.1, which is way too high, tells me that I had been naughtier than I thought, I knew I had been throwing caution to the wind and eating a fair few carbs, ( interesting why do we say a fair few meaning many when actually few means not many ???) but I also didn't realise it was having that great an impact on my BGL, as I have been taking my once a week diabetic medication "Trulicity". So it goes without saying if my blood sugar was up then so was my weight and by quiet a bit too, so this 28 days was, and is a necessity . To start this journey it was important to me that we invested in a cold press juicer to get as many nutrients from the vegetables as possible, and although Jason uses a cold press juicer most of the time he still uses the fast juicer and a blender, which is good for me too as I didn't want to make the fast juicer redundant just yet. With the cold press Juicer, one of the things I have noticed most is the taste of the lemon in the juice, with the fast juicer I peel the lemons in the slow juicer I don't, so you really get a zestier taste of lemon ( which I love) also new to this 28 dayer, is the ginger shots in the morning, Jason recommends it and I am loving the heat from the ginger in the mornings. There are loads of free juice recipes on Jason Vales website, which I am finding invaluable, and Andrew has just planted a new winter garden so I can hardly wait for our next bumper crop. I use to have a subscribers button so you would get notified when I posted a new blog, but I have been really slack and as you can see it has been 10 months since my last post, so I guess the button just dissovled into cyber space anyway no worries I post to facebook so if your interested in reading my blog, just click on the post and you can read all my blogs right from the beginning in 2015, ( I use to write alot ha ha) actually started my sugar free regime 2 years earlier but late 2015 was when I found Joe Cross. Well until next post "keep on Juicing " Yep I am doing it again, the vegetable juice fast, inspired by Joe Cross's movie "Fat Sick and nearly Dead". Way back in 2015. Andrew and I were so inspired by the movie that we started a 7 day juice fast and ended up going for 28 days, with some fantastic results. Over the years we have half heartedly done a juice reboot, but like I said it was half hearted and it was hard, also I have to say it is very hard to socialise while juicing, although I can remember going to a party at my daughters house and adding a few shots of Vodka to my juice. So since the Juicing phases we have done the low carb, ( can't really remember the last time I had white bread, rice or pasta) then I discovered Keto! which is like low carb on steroids, and I still think Keto is King. I have to say that I was having a few too many cheat days were happening, anyway I wasn't feeling the best the weight was sneaking back on and generally I wasn't feeling real good. Meanwhile back in August of this year I was put on a new drug (new to me that is) Trulicity, for my diabetes, I have heard that this is sometimes prescribed for weight loss. I totally understand how this could work, the first two weeks of taking this once a week injection, was horrendous, I have never experienced nausea and vomiting like it, just in one weekend I lost over 4 kilo, and I had no appetite and after that episode I was a little scared to eat anything, thinking it would just come back up. Fast foreward 13 weeks and 13 shots later and the nausea has almost completely gone, I still don't have an appetite, and if I'd only eaten when I was hungry I wouldn't have a problem, but because of this lack of hunger it has made this Juice fast a lot easier than the couple of times we tried the reboot. So last Monday Andrew and I decided to give the Juicing fast another whirl, I sheepishly suggested 5 days, but now we are 7 days in and don't look like stopping for a little while yet, another 10 days may be the ending date as I have a blood test on that day and I am booked in to get the second jab for bloody Covid. Just to leave you with some statistics from the first 28 day fast: My BGL - 3.9 (without any medication for diabetes) : My weight was down 8.1 kilo Andrew had lost a total of 6.5 kilo his weight loss was more noticable than mine. So far this week, I have lost 3.7 kilo and BGL 6.4, Andrew has lost 2.5 kilo, we are in lockdown at the moment so that makes it easier also, we won't be allowed out of lockdown until we have had our second jab! will keep you posted. As Joe Cross use to say "Juice On Happy Easter everyone, it is true today I didn't have any chocolate for Easter, in the past I have had a sugar free chocolate bar or something of similar nature but not today. Before you praise me for being good, it is because I have been over indulging in the carbs, and I am really feeling quiet guilty about it all.
I did however stumble across a new movie (new for me that is, it is a 2020 movie) and it is called "Fat Fiction". I strongly recommend this movie, and I give it five out of five for the information content and their attempt to kill the phobia about "Saturated Fat". So many people still fear that eating fat will make you fat after 40 years! that dogma has been proven to be false. The movie also points out some very good points and statistics on Cholesterol, most doctors favourite subject, they can't wait to prescribe a Statin drug! My doctor is from the old school, and still believes the fats will cause stroke and heart attacks. We have come to an agreeable understanding now, I wont take the Statins and he wont send me for the tests. Having said that, if you have watched the movie "Cereal Killers" Donal, does the very high fat low carb diet for a month and of course his cholesterol went up (his LDL which is the bad one) BUT!!!! it is shown that the LDL particles were large and fluffy and would cause no harm, we are not offered the particle size test, they just want to appease the Pharmaceuticals and prescribe a cholesterol lowering drug. I have watched the movie Fat Fiction 3 times now it is inspiring for me, I am hoping that I am inspired enough to stay on the keto wagon. That is about all I have to say for now, will keep you posted! Keto is King, Keep on Ketoing Yes I am back again, I have been MIA for a long time, 2 years and 1 month since my last blog post, and up until Covid 19 lock down I had kept pretty true to my Keto way of life, I did get depressed during lock down, not seeing other humans regularly, except for my family that I share my house with, it didn't help that my eldest daughter had moved to Cairns with her husband and my grand kids, and she said it was going to be forever. Fast Forward to post lockdown October 2020 and things changed, for the better! my daughter and her family moved back to where they once were, closer to me, bingo started up again and I actually added to my outings by going to Tuncurry once a fortnight to play "Hollywood" and I am not depressed, I am actually happy for the first time in a long time. One thing did change for the worse though, during lock down, I fell off my Keto wagon little by little until I didn't care and I was regularly having, Friday fry-ups, it was like a small pleasure in a unpleasant time. Anyway along with the Keto way of life there is also the Intermittent Fasting (IF) which really does work, it is a way of giving your body time to use up most of the food eaten in the day, 16: 8 is the most used IF, and if you haven't done IF before, you eat in the 8 hour window and fast for the other 16 hours of the day, so gone are the days of Breakfast being the most important meal of the day, unless you have your breakfast at midday. I like to research different methods of Keto and fasting and it came to my attention that a regular longer fast is even better for you so I started to fast each Monday and Tuesday, so this is basically a 48 hour plus fasting period, and I have been doing this for over 12 months now. I love to cook but here is the problem, the things I love to cook... Cakes, Biscuits, Pastries, Pies and Sausage Rolls all taste so much better with the carbs, (flour, pastry) I do try to emulate these to the keto versions but they just don't taste as good, although I am still trying, When I was just sugar free it was a lot easier, you can always make great food just subbing the sugar, but your diet results are not the same, I will never go back to using sugar in fact I am sure I don't have any in the house. What I need to do is reset my mindset to what inspired me to try Keto in the first place, so I went back through my blog and found the post from when I first started and the inspiration, hoping if I revisit this, I will be inspired once again to follow the Keto (lazy keto) like I did in the beginning, I have cut and pasted the inspiration blog ... There has been some big changes to the way I am thinking about food these days, I am still a sugar free juicing crusader, but I think I got a bit too cocky for my own good with the juicing fasts, with slipping a little bit more fruit than I should have and even after 50 odd years started to eat apples again (another story about the apples) anyway even though the last couple of 10 day fasts I did with the juicing I did lose a little weight and my blood sugar dropped a little but nothing like the results I was getting when I first started to juice fast. I know that fruit is not healthy for me, being diabetic, there is way too much fructose, yet I love fresh fruit and I suppose the sugar addict in me just had to have a small taste - wont hurt? right! wrong as I found out the hard way. Well I was going to keep doing the juice fasts, even though I know they are not sustainable, and if you throw caution to the wind you will gain your weight back, but I thought it worked for 2 years I kept my weight down, went on 4 cruises ( on which I drank and ate like a person with 4 arms) and still managed to keep my weight at a reasonable level, but not quiet my goal. So when did my thoughts change from Juicing to Keto? well as you may or may not know, my daughter and I play in a bowling league on Monday nights and we had been on a break while Crystal had my beautiful granddaughter Emily and I went travelling. Three weeks ago Crystal and I returned to the bowling league and when I saw Andrew the guy that runs and owns the bowling alley, I was shocked he looked so healthy and had lost so much weight, 16.5 kilos to be exact and he said that he had been doing the Keto diet, the transformation was incredible, I have seen the internet stories with before and after photos, but it is not the same when you see someone every week and then have a 6 month break come back and they are a whole different person, that was all the inspiration I needed to think I have to give this a go, maybe I can reach my goal finally. One week ago today Andrew and I started our Keto journey, and so far I have to say that I am quiet enjoying the food and the outcomes, the first 6 days I lost a total of 3.8 kilos (most would be water weight) and my blood sugars dropped from 7.8 to 4.7 and today I am down another point 4 of a kilo and BGL was 4.0, so am really pleased. OK so with everything there has to be a con, and so far I have noticed that even after showering and using a deodorant I get a little B.O, not like me , never have before, and also for the last two days I have muscle aches in my legs, feels like I have climbed mount Everest, and it is relentless, Oh and I cant sleep (but that is not so unusual for me) I took two Panadol last night and finally got a bit of shut eye. but if that is the only side effect I am ok with that, it is worth it to get this weight off and get my diabetes in control again. As you can imagine I am more sugar free than I ever was, meaning I am counting carbs and not going over 20 grams a day, which is not a lot of carbs as even healthy vegetables have carbs, and when I bought a Michelle Briggs scale that calculates the Protein, Fats and Carbs in nearly all foods, I discovered to my horror that a green apple is 24.6 grams of carbs, I will not have apple for another 50 years ha ha. When I first started this blog, I think I named all the diets I had tried with some success and some failures, and Atkins was one of the short lived success diets but now this Keto diet has been described as Atkins on Steroids and it is true I see now how little bits of carbs were sneaking into my Atkins diet everywhere, but now I am older a lot more wiser especially, Evil Sugar, and that little bit more determined to succeed . Anyway I will keep you posted with how my new woe (way of eating) is going. Keto is King! I still think Keto is King but I need to own it like a Keto Queen, I am going to go watch some more keto inspiring, content I know there is a lot of video's out there and I will have to see what my favourite guru is up to these days Dr Ken Barry, he might even be the keto king himself ha ha, just wish he didn't sniff during his videos. Well until next blog (hopefully wont be 2 years ) "Keep on Ketoing" Well I have not been a good blogger of late, 8 months late since my last post and I have to say that even though I am still living the Keto lifestyle, nothing much has happened. I have not lost anymore weight since my last post, the scales have been busy though they go up by a few hundred grams and go down by one hundred, I have gone to only weighing once a week as I challenged my daughter to see who could lose the most weight. To be honest I thought it may motivate me to get serious again , I have been following the Lazy Keto lifestyle and I am Literally being lazy about it.
So I don't believe I have been in Ketosis since I started Keto last October Well it was the season to be silly and usually we eat and drink everything that isn't nailed down, but to prove to myself that I have found a WOE that is sustainable, I wanted to get through Christmas still have an enjoyable time with my family and still be in control of my health. I am happy to say that it wasn't hard at all, I was still able to enjoy a few alcoholic beverages, with the help of Sugar Free Cruisers, (only sold at one place here in Taree so when they are out I am out!) but the bonus is, now that I am on Keto, I need less alcohol than I did before to get happy ha ha, My daughter Crystal Humphreys and her husband Shawn made a lovely baked lunch of Chicken and Pork, and the potatoes looked amazing, but I really didn't desire them at all, I had meat and green veg and was happy with that. I had previously made desserts for everyone Sugar Free of course for the family and Keto for Andrew and I, so all in all we didn't miss out on anything and remained Keto for the silly season. Ok so that was Christmas and now we are halfway through January, I haven't lost anymore weight since my original loss of 5.4kg, it has been fluctuating, going up and down like a yoyo, but that is ok I have been reading up on stalling weight loss and I am confident it will start up again. I have a new Guru, his name is Dr Ken D Berry, I posted something from him last blog, and since then I have been watching all his videos, he helped me out with the do's and don'ts of Magnesium, also by watching his videos I have had a few ah ha moments, especially with the high protein and low carb bars you can buy, do not believe it, there is hidden carbs in everything!. As I mentioned before, the Sugar Free Cruisers only available at one grog shop in Taree so they did in fact run out, I can still enjoy a drink by mixing Vodka and diet coke, but the truth is I am addicted to diet coke and although it doesn't have sugar in it, it is not good for you, so I am trying to wean myself off it (she says as she sips on a nice cold diet as she types ha ha) anyway I only just discovered Sprite Lite, don't think I have had a lemonade since I was 8, but it tastes really good with the Vodka and it works out a lot cheaper to mix my own still have a guilt free alcoholic drink that doesn't spoil my ketosis. I am always learning and that is the way it is meant to be, you hear a lot of criticism, from doubting Thomas's but really if you want to lose some weight and get healthy again, go keto. This week on Face book a fitness person Jillian Michaels said that Keto was bad for you, I didn't even bother to read what she had to say as my thoughts immediately was "how can eating real food be bad for you?"but what I did listen to was Dr Ken D Barry''s response to this woman, he wasn't nasty or anything (I might have been ha ha) but his explanation and defense of Keto is why he is my Guru! If you have some time to spare watch this Youtube video, you don't actually have to watch I usually continue doing other things on the computer while just listening to him. https://www.youtube.com/watch? Also this is another video you must watch/listen to, 5 foods you think or were told were healthy but are not, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oB_PPQ5cHyE I thought I had something else to mention but it will have to next blog. Keep on Ketoing Just 11 days until Christmas and this is week 8 of my Keto journey, my blood sugar has normalized, I haven't had any really high spikes, the highest reading in the last 7 weeks was 5.6, so I am happy that this WOE is good for my diabetes, the weight issue is a little more complex for me anyway, Andrew is having some good loses, in the last 2 weeks I have been going up and down like a yo yo, might be where they came up with yo yo dieting ( der!). After 6 weeks I was 5.4 kilo down, yippee but in the last two weeks, like I said (like a yo yo) it is a little disheartening when you feel you haven't eaten much and the scales go up not down. I follow a few Keto groups on Facebook and they don't recommend that you weigh everyday for this reason the fluctuation puts you off, but I have always found that doing the daily weigh in on the Wii, helps me to stay focused on the end result. Here is a little motivational image that someone shared that made me put the weight loss and fat loss into perspective. I don't really see this as being a diet, because i am not depriving myself of food, I am not hungry, eating healthy fats keeps you fuller for longer, some people (so called nutritionists) say this WOE is not sustainable, I have to ask why? after 8 weeks I am not craving bread, or potatoes (I love potatoes) or rice, and was never a fan of pasta so if you don't crave it or miss it where is the harm? they say you can't cut out whole food groups, BUT we don't need Carbohydrates, our bodies can function perfectly without them.
Dietitians, and Nutritionists have a lot to answer for by telling people to go low fat, this is what is making people sick and unhealthy, our brain is about 70% fat and needs the good fats to function efficiently, and Proteins are also an essential food group, but Carbs simple or complex are just addictive calorie wasters. I was already sugar free, so any cooking, was always sugar free, but now I am cooking sugar free and carb free, in fact I make bread rolls that taste and (sort of look like) the real thing. The Bread Roll recipe I acquired from the Diet Doctor, here is a link to that recipe, www.dietdoctor.com/recipes/the-keto-bread I will have to update my recipes page on this blog to include some of the really good Keto friendly recipes that I have found and tried, I made a Keto version of a Monte Carlo biscuit, I make my own strawberry jam with nothing added and use this along with a cream cheese filling in a coconut biscuit, as my friend Judy would say "they are to die for"ha ha. The Keto groups that I follow are really good for hunting out the products that are Keto friendly, one member in particular even goes so far as posting the supermarkets specials for the week that are Keto friendly, the group is called Lazy Keto but I think it should be called Easy Keto, anyway I will be remaining on Keto as my diabetes approves, and I will be a lot happier when the scales start to descend a little more, which I am positive they will. I don't really see an issue of getting through Christmas doing Keto, My daughter Crystal is hosting Christmas again this year (she has the kiddies) I will make some Keto friendly desserts and just have more pork and crackling instead of the roast potatoes, gone are the days of eating for the sake of eating and King Henry the VIII feasts of eating everything that wasn't nailed down, we should all "eat to live " not " live to eat" but I know it is hard when food tastes so darn good. To all my friends and family that take a few minutes to read my ramblings on Sugar and now Keto, thank you and have a Merry and Safe Christmas Keep On Ketoing Ok so I am two days off 3 weeks on Keto, and for a week and a half my blood sugar has not been over 4.7, it actually hit 3.6 yesterday, some may say that is a little low but I felt fine, my weight loss to date is 4.9 kilo, I had a couple of small gains which I put down to my toilet habits, have been a little bit out of whack, don't want to hit you with (TMI) anyway that was all down to not enough fiber, but I found a fix for that and everything is good again.
So is it hard to give up carbs? well it sounds hard but it really isn't, I am not hungry at all, I am having two meals a day, the occasional snack but I practice IF (Intermittent Fasting ) which means I only eat in a 6 hour window so really there is no time to fit in another meal. I know that your taste buds change every two weeks so if you can go without one of your favourite foods for two weeks chances are you will not crave this food anymore, but the memory is strong, I still love chocolate, but I know I can live without it, I also love potato and every which way you can cook it, but I am strong, and my Bingo buddies help me stay that way by putting the temptation of a great big bowl of wedges on the table and offering them around, I politely refuse but inside I am thinking I could eat that whole bowl ha ha, but each week they are less tempting, so I feel I am winning the carb cravings. I have this last week discovered some new recipes that I found to be very good, the keto bread roll, for a change not made with a dozen eggs so doesn't have that eggy taste, it is made with a small amount of almond meal and Psyllium husk (which also boosts the fiber) they surprisingly tasted like a wholemeal bread roll, and only 2g carbs. So now this bread can be the base to so many meals. I have adapted one of my old favourite recipes the sugar free cheese cake I just make it without a base and put it in a bowl, I don't miss the base it is all about the cream cheese anyway. I have been compiling keto recipes in a folder so I will be able to have a variety of things to make, and I have been experimenting with coatings now that bread crumbs are out of the equation, bought a packet of pork crackles (no carbs no sugar) and ran them through the food processor with half a cup of Psyllium husk, then just dipped chicken in egg and my mix and cooked as usual, I think they turned out good. I actually think that this way of eating is sustainable, I still miss my juices a bit, nothing gives you that feeling of your body soaking up all the nutrients like a green juice does, but for now I have to think of the carb count in a juice , at least with doing the keto diet you can go out for tea order a steak and salad no chips no sauce or dressings and still appear to fit in with everyone else, no turning down invitations because your on a juice fast and don't want to break it. Well that is about it for now, you will be happy to know that the body odour phase has passed, must have been my body expelling all the bad toxins, still have bouts of energy (nothing wrong with that) but I am still not sleeping maybe I can take a supplement. Something for me to report on next time. Keep on Ketoing ! ,There has been some big changes to the way I am thinking about food these days, I am still a sugar free juicing crusader, but I think I got a bit too cocky for my own good with the juicing fasts, with slipping a little bit more fruit than I should have and even after 50 odd years started to eat apples again (another story about the apples) anyway even though the last couple of 10 day fasts I did with the juicing I did lose a little weight and my blood sugar dropped a little but nothing like the results I was getting when I first started to juice fast.
