Officially today is Christmas Day, but due to family commitments we had our Christmas Day yesterday with all the family and it was a great day, I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and hope you are as fortunate as I was to spend it with your family, oh and try not to overeat, I know I didn't hold back yesterday, I had spent 3 days in the kitchen cooking all the lovely sugar free treats (because I care about my families health) and I was going to allow myself to eat whatever I wanted on the day, but as usual I made way too much food, and feel I overate. I think we are all a little more educated these days, on food, eating to live not living to eat, I was so impressed with my family all making the effort to get healthy and my sister in-law and brother in-law getting into the juicing, not going the full Monty, but are really looking into the nutrient based smoothies as a supplement to their diets, not everyone needs to lose weight, some people just want to feel more energized (like my cousin Helen) and healthier, (except my eldest who claims "hell no" I'm not sugar free! ha ha, but she did make the sugar free custard for our dinner?) I say give it time, it takes some people longer for the penny to drop. My recent trip to Sydney to watch my new favourite Big Bash team "Thunder" I did gain some weight, a little over 2 kilo's to be exact but I just thought I would juice for 4 days before our big Christmas dinner, and in 4 days I lost 4.6 kilos so I was over the moon with the results for sure and I suppose that is why I allowed myself some freedom yesterday and didn't feel guilty, although I was a little too scared to weigh myself today, I will be sensible today and see what happens tomorrow. It since going so hard on the juice fasting my stomach doesn't feel so great after eating lots of food, so I am glad Christmas only comes once a year. You could do as I have and sign up for Joe's 5 day juice challenge. I am always interested in improving or learning something new about how I can be the healthiest version of myself, I believe I have today made the best choices for myself and my family and some things I know now I wish I knew before I had any of the issues I have faced in the last 21 years, it is funny but that is how long since I have had a cigarette, that is the first good move I made for myself, and I couldn't see my health actually going down hill from there, but it did (and no it is not because I stopped smoking ha ha), but most people say with most situations, it will get worse before it gets better, like an alcoholic, they will hit rock bottom before they realize there is a problem. The doctors made me aware that I had health issues and I did occasionally glance sideways in a mirror as I passed so I knew I had weight problems that were actually getting worse even with or should I say? because of the advice of the medical profession. Yesterday I had a discussion with my sister in-law about infusion juicing, they have been trying, this made some good sense to me, but I did have questions, so I turned to my "juice guru" Joe Cross for the answers, and I feel that for my health and weight loss I would prefer to stick to the "Juicing" against going full on "blending"(Smoothies) don't get me wrong I love to have a smoothie at least once a day now (it started as one a week ha ha "the Sunday Roast") and to make my one a day smoothie I use a mean green juice and add an avocado and banana to the blender and it is the most satisfying drink keeps you satiated for hours. Below is some info I found on Joe Cross's site, but as my Sister in-law said "if juicing works for you stick to it" and the juicing has definitely worked for me and is still working as I got the desired results in just 4 days. :-) Juicing vs. Blending: Everything You Need to Know By: Joe Cross One of the most common questions people ask me is “Joe, what is the difference between juicing and blending?” Now, you might think the difference is obvious – but it turns out there’s a lot of confusion about the two, and many people believe they are juicing when in fact they are blending. So, let’s clear things up! When juicing, the machine extracts the juice (this is the water and most of the nutrients the produce contains), leaving behind the pulp. When blending, there is no left-over pulp. Blenders pulverize the whole produce to make a smoothie. What can make this confusing is that these machines all use different names. If you see the term “Nutrition Extractor™”, for example, how do you know if you are juicing or blending? Simply ask yourself the question: is the machine removing the pulp? If not, it’s not juicing! But Joe, which one is better? The short answer is, I love both. I look at it this way: we all need plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit in our diet, whether we eat, juice, or blend them. They are nutrient dense powerhouses, and however we choose to take them in – it’s all good! Juicing and blending are both great ways to include a lot of produce in our diet, and also to consume a greater variety than we may otherwise eat. But they are different and it is important to understand why. When you juice you are removing the insoluble fiber – the pulp. Don’t get me wrong. Fiber is good for you. It keeps your digestive tract healthy and it slows down the absorption of sugar. But it also slows down the absorption of nutrients and some nutrients stay in the fiber. When you juice, you are extracting up to 70% of the nutrition right into your glass1, and without the insoluble fiber your body absorbs 100% of these nutrients. Take a look at the ingredients you use next time you make a Mean Green juice for example, and imagine eating that as a huge bowl of salad at every meal – you’d be chewing all day! Even in smoothie, that’s a lot of produce to consume. Still concerned about fiber? One of our Reboot nutritionists, Claire, has written a great post explaining the facts about fiber and juicing. On a Reboot, which is best? You have two options when selecting a Reboot plan: juice only, or juice plus eating an exclusively fruit and vegetable diet. Both are great, and which you choose will depend on your goals and your current state of health. If you are Rebooting for health reasons, or have modest weight loss goals, an eating Reboot may be a better option. However, if you are Rebooting because you have moderate to high weight loss goals, a juicing Reboot is a better option. When you juice only, you tend to lose weight more rapidly. I’m frequently asked “Can I use my blender/Vitamix/NutriBullet on a Reboot?” You can, but if you do so you are doing an ‘eating’ Reboot: the plan you follow will be different, the juice recipes will need to be modified (they are a created for a juicer!), and the results you see may also be different. Still confused? Watch me make a juice and a smoothie in the Reboot Kitchen. You’ll see what the difference is! Watch Joe explain And to further help you understand the differences between juicing and blending we’ve put together the following Juicing Vs. Blending Infographic. Here’s a sneak peak (click on the image to see it in its entirety!). If you want to learn even more about juicing and blending, I’ve partnered with MindBodyGreen to create an in-depth video course: A Complete Guide to Juicing and Blending.
