So I haven't written anything here for a couple of days and contrary to the title of today's blog there isn't any real breaking news on Juicing, that I can tell you except... We had our first juice yesterday using some of our home grown silver beet, and it was beautiful, clean crisp and fresh and it tasted good too, no pesticides or cold storage damage (has anyone else noticed the celery lately not looking the best) I can hardly wait for the rest of the veges to take off, ("straight in my basket") I am proud of all the hard work Andrew has put into our garden. I heard from my cousin the other day that her son and daughter in-law have been juicing since watching the movie "fat sick and nearly dead" and she says he has never looked better, and without seeing him I know from my own results how true this is, I have heard a few people say that when they tried the juicing they gained weight instead of losing weight, and I think a certain amount of common sense is still needed, number one rule is "don't over do the fruit content of your juice!" this can make or break your success, fruit contains a lot of Fructose (sugar) and if you have been keeping up with all the latest information "Sugar is Poison" I tell most people who ask, to make sure you have 80% of your juice as vegetable, this looks like this (celery, Kale, cucumber, spinach + 1 green apple) that is 4 veg 1 fruit. My favourite juices these days are the ones that have 6 or more green veg and lemon, lime and ginger, it is known as a mean green, but you have to vary them, so you don't lose interest and don't be afraid to chuck in a veg you have never eaten before or even a veg that you wouldn't think would taste good as a juice, I threw in a couple of sweet potatoes last week and yes it was sweet, and a little floury but it was a nice change. After years and years of dieting and counting calories, I refuse to count calories now and as Dr Robert Lustig says not all calories are equal, but basically if you eat less you will lose weight, that is why juice fasting is perfect for losing weight especially if you stick to the number one rule! if you have 3-4 juices a day with at least 4 veg and 1 fruit, you would be consuming less calories than if you had your 3 meals a day, and the bonus is that your body is absorbing all the nutrients from the veg so instead of feeling like you are on a diet and feeling deprived you feel the opposite . I have not yet heard of any unsuccessful juice fasting episodes, but if you have one feel free to share, I think everyone needs the pro's and con's so they can make an informed decision. Another close friend of mine told me this week that she gave up drinking Coke and eating lollies and has lost 8 kilo's I think that is fantastic, it just goes to show that you only have to make small changes to start to get results, and not trying to take anything away from her success and great efforts to change some of her habits, I had to let her know that although she has switched from a bourbon and coke to a gin and tonic, the tonic water has "Sugar!" frightening I know that even the things we don't think have sugar, so we don't even look at the label, yep it has sugar! so always check labels, and the good news, for my friend is that there is a diet tonic water. I am always inspired by people who take control of their diet and health, at least they are having a go, I am so proud of my friend and my daughter who is giving the the low carb way a go, and also having a juice or two daily to increase her nutrient intake, so hard for the young ones who don't have weight or health issues to actually make a change to their lifestyle but why wait till you have a problem, prevention is better than cure, right? on the other side of the equation, I shake my head with dismay at the people who have all the information on sugar and the harm it will do to your body and your overall health, but don't make any changes at all and worse of all is that some of these people are making the food choices for their kids, knowing that there is too much sugar in processed foods, I watched a show on the BBC this morning of a Doctor that helped a woman reverse her Type 2 diabetes and her family's weight problems, this family were eating Macca's 5 nights a week and not just a happy meal (although there is nothing happy about any Maccas meals) but 2-3 burgers each large chips and jumbo coke each! I am not surprised that they all had weight issues but was a little surprised they didn't all have diabetes, anyway one thing the doctor said when checking their cupboards for sugar content in foods was " if it has more than 5 ingredients don't eat it" I have heard this before and I try to enforce this on my daughter when she says "it hasn't go much sugar" and when I look at the ingredients my answer is "it hasn't got much food either" meaning half the ingredients are either numbers or names of stuff not identified as food. I have to admit up until about 4 years ago I never looked at the labels and 80% of my grocery shop was processed foods, I always looked for the specials and bought the cheapest products, which turned out to be the most expensive as it cost me my health, trips to the doctors and the cost of medications is not cheap either, since I started the juicing 90% of my total shopping is fruit and veg, 10 % processed foods the grocery bill is cheaper but I have to shop more often (at least until the rest of our veges grow) I am not on any medications and I haven't been to the doctors since September and I read every label, I am not a hero I just take my health seriously, you only get one life and I nearly ruined mine.

Good on you Wendy! Can't say I've adopted a liquid only diet, but I joined the gym & have certainly made big changes to my diet. Have lost some weight! I did have a gymjunkie from Boostjuice in the Brisbane mall on Thursday. Loved it! The healthy option.

It is good to hear that you are making some changes, one step at a time, you can keep the gym I have never been inclined ha ha, I occasionally get guilted into using the walking machine but that is as far as I want to go.
