Yes I am back again, I have been MIA for a long time, 2 years and 1 month since my last blog post, and up until Covid 19 lock down I had kept pretty true to my Keto way of life, I did get depressed during lock down, not seeing other humans regularly, except for my family that I share my house with, it didn't help that my eldest daughter had moved to Cairns with her husband and my grand kids, and she said it was going to be forever. Fast Forward to post lockdown October 2020 and things changed, for the better! my daughter and her family moved back to where they once were, closer to me, bingo started up again and I actually added to my outings by going to Tuncurry once a fortnight to play "Hollywood" and I am not depressed, I am actually happy for the first time in a long time. One thing did change for the worse though, during lock down, I fell off my Keto wagon little by little until I didn't care and I was regularly having, Friday fry-ups, it was like a small pleasure in a unpleasant time. Anyway along with the Keto way of life there is also the Intermittent Fasting (IF) which really does work, it is a way of giving your body time to use up most of the food eaten in the day, 16: 8 is the most used IF, and if you haven't done IF before, you eat in the 8 hour window and fast for the other 16 hours of the day, so gone are the days of Breakfast being the most important meal of the day, unless you have your breakfast at midday. I like to research different methods of Keto and fasting and it came to my attention that a regular longer fast is even better for you so I started to fast each Monday and Tuesday, so this is basically a 48 hour plus fasting period, and I have been doing this for over 12 months now. I love to cook but here is the problem, the things I love to cook... Cakes, Biscuits, Pastries, Pies and Sausage Rolls all taste so much better with the carbs, (flour, pastry) I do try to emulate these to the keto versions but they just don't taste as good, although I am still trying, When I was just sugar free it was a lot easier, you can always make great food just subbing the sugar, but your diet results are not the same, I will never go back to using sugar in fact I am sure I don't have any in the house. What I need to do is reset my mindset to what inspired me to try Keto in the first place, so I went back through my blog and found the post from when I first started and the inspiration, hoping if I revisit this, I will be inspired once again to follow the Keto (lazy keto) like I did in the beginning, I have cut and pasted the inspiration blog ... There has been some big changes to the way I am thinking about food these days, I am still a sugar free juicing crusader, but I think I got a bit too cocky for my own good with the juicing fasts, with slipping a little bit more fruit than I should have and even after 50 odd years started to eat apples again (another story about the apples) anyway even though the last couple of 10 day fasts I did with the juicing I did lose a little weight and my blood sugar dropped a little but nothing like the results I was getting when I first started to juice fast. I know that fruit is not healthy for me, being diabetic, there is way too much fructose, yet I love fresh fruit and I suppose the sugar addict in me just had to have a small taste - wont hurt? right! wrong as I found out the hard way. Well I was going to keep doing the juice fasts, even though I know they are not sustainable, and if you throw caution to the wind you will gain your weight back, but I thought it worked for 2 years I kept my weight down, went on 4 cruises ( on which I drank and ate like a person with 4 arms) and still managed to keep my weight at a reasonable level, but not quiet my goal. So when did my thoughts change from Juicing to Keto? well as you may or may not know, my daughter and I play in a bowling league on Monday nights and we had been on a break while Crystal had my beautiful granddaughter Emily and I went travelling. Three weeks ago Crystal and I returned to the bowling league and when I saw Andrew the guy that runs and owns the bowling alley, I was shocked he looked so healthy and had lost so much weight, 16.5 kilos to be exact and he said that he had been doing the Keto diet, the transformation was incredible, I have seen the internet stories with before and after photos, but it is not the same when you see someone every week and then have a 6 month break come back and they are a whole different person, that was all the inspiration I needed to think I have to give this a go, maybe I can reach my goal finally. One week ago today Andrew and I started our Keto journey, and so far I have to say that I am quiet enjoying the food and the outcomes, the first 6 days I lost a total of 3.8 kilos (most would be water weight) and my blood sugars dropped from 7.8 to 4.7 and today I am down another point 4 of a kilo and BGL was 4.0, so am really pleased. OK so with everything there has to be a con, and so far I have noticed that even after showering and using a deodorant I get a little B.O, not like me , never have before, and also for the last two days I have muscle aches in my legs, feels like I have climbed mount Everest, and it is relentless, Oh and I cant sleep (but that is not so unusual for me) I took two Panadol last night and finally got a bit of shut eye. but if that is the only side effect I am ok with that, it is worth it to get this weight off and get my diabetes in control again. As you can imagine I am more sugar free than I ever was, meaning I am counting carbs and not going over 20 grams a day, which is not a lot of carbs as even healthy vegetables have carbs, and when I bought a Michelle Briggs scale that calculates the Protein, Fats and Carbs in nearly all foods, I discovered to my horror that a green apple is 24.6 grams of carbs, I will not have apple for another 50 years ha ha. When I first started this blog, I think I named all the diets I had tried with some success and some failures, and Atkins was one of the short lived success diets but now this Keto diet has been described as Atkins on Steroids and it is true I see now how little bits of carbs were sneaking into my Atkins diet everywhere, but now I am older a lot more wiser especially, Evil Sugar, and that little bit more determined to succeed . Anyway I will keep you posted with how my new woe (way of eating) is going. Keto is King! I still think Keto is King but I need to own it like a Keto Queen, I am going to go watch some more keto inspiring, content I know there is a lot of video's out there and I will have to see what my favourite guru is up to these days Dr Ken Barry, he might even be the keto king himself ha ha, just wish he didn't sniff during his videos. Well until next blog (hopefully wont be 2 years ) "Keep on Ketoing"
