Well it is obvious to me that Christmas is not the time of year for the health conscience, I just looked at a really big Christmas hamper to win :-( and there was not one thing in the hamper that I would eat or drink or give to my family and friends without feeling incredibly guilty, there was a box of bon bons but the toy inside would probably be really small and therefore a choking hazard for my grandsons, so you guessed it I won't be entering said competition. Should you throw all caution to the wind because one day of the year you can be Henry the 8th and gorge yourself silly, because it is Christmas? I have found that when I started to juice fast, I would think of all the things i would have when the fast was finished, (this is probably how we go back to our old habits after a diet) and when I allowed myself to eat, I had the foods I thought about, but I didn't enjoy them like I thought I would, in fact after the 28 days of juicing it up, I craved the juices and not the solid foods, so it has been easy and more satisfying to me to keep juicing, I am more particular about what I eat these days, I try out new recipes but they are always sugar free and toxic oil free! I taste test those as well, I do avoid carbs like the plague though, as with my trials and tribulations over the last 4 months, I have found if I want to remain medication free and control my Type 2 diabetes (Which I do) I have to be very vigilant where the carbs are concerned, and the last time I had bread was at my daughters Valedicts dinner in September, and honestly I don't miss it, my daughter and my friend are both ditching the carbs at the moment, which I think is highly commendable, everyone loves bread but bread doesn't love everyone back! I care more about my health than I do about the few minutes that the carbs actually taste good, once you have eaten (potato, bread, pasta or rice to name a few) I feel heavy and tired, and you will notice most people, like to have a nanny nap after a carb loaded meal. In actual fact I don't feel like I have deprived myself of a whole food group I feel like I have gained a better insight into the fuel that my body prefers and runs better on recently I have noticed that if I feel the mid afternoon slump coming on, I have a handful of nuts and within minutes I feel good and find I don't need the once needed nanny nap. So back to Christmas, I would be happy to serve everyone up a large chilled vegetable juice for lunch but the whinging would be deafening ha ha, but I have been thinking and planning what to have for a few weeks now, watching some cooking shows for some inspiration and trying out a few new recipes, this afternoon i am going to give the Chocolate mousse a test run, Terri says "she likes chocolate mousse", and because this is Australia and no sight of snow anywhere on Christmas day, we will be having a cold lunch with a seafood theme, at least if you have lots of prawns and other assorted seafood it will feel like your eating like a king, maybe not as much as old Henry but Christmas lunch has to be special or what is the point? One of the things that put a smile on my face this week was the news that... The Heart Tick on it's way out What started with good intentions 26 years ago became corrupted by commercial dollars and bad information. The Heart Foundation has had increasing pressure upon it to get rid of a flawed system that had way too much sugar and carbohydrate allowance. The Canadian Heart Foundation led the way earlier this year with scrapping the heart tick program and Australian lagged behind. I would like to say it's good news around but there is a recommendation to adopt the star rating system, recommended by the food industry. I think we are moving out of the pot and into the fire! Look at signing the petition against that flawed system that recommends margarine over butter and "Up and Go" as a breakfast for children. https://www.change.org/p/australian-government-scrap-the-healthy-star-food-rating-system?tk=2JdcN_WgCoN-qigdqAGs4xZHObi7GtQCH_6OZvtKN8M&utm_source=petition_update&utm_medium=email Now we need to get rid of the other commercial dollar generated symbol "LOW Gi" which foods like Nutella and Milo claim to be, which I have said before makes a mockery of the whole low Gi concept, I know we are all smarter than the mind altering advertising of the greedy money grabbing companies that push their products on to you the consumer, without a care for your health and well being coming into the equation, worse still is that the products are aimed towards kids! if we stop buying these products they will have no choice but to stop making them! or will they just change the label and the claim to being healthy? they have done it before, we need to be one step ahead of these marketing pros.
That is my rant for today, keep on keeping on !
